Event Details

The internet has become a contested site: issues as diverse as censorship, connectivity, digital divides, hacking and hactivism, grass-root resistance in virtual worlds and even what apps you can buy from an online store all affect how people as individuals, as consumers, and as citizens engage both with and on the internet.

The internet research group of Otago (IRGO) and InternetNZ invites you to join us in a conversation about the internet, and how it is used both as a site of resistance and as a tool of control; how laws, norms, policies, technology and the marketplace all affect what happens online, and how pressures for both centralization and dispersion are shaping the new media landscape.

The internet research group of Otago (IRGO) invites anybody interested in these issues to join us at the University of Otago, Jan 26-28, for discussion, debate, and networking at the second irgo unConference.

Note that registration is free, but places are limited.

We also invite those intending to join us to submit a brief (100-200 word) précis for topics for panels and discussions that fall under the general banner of ‘resistance & control’ (see below for theme ideas).

Potential topics might include, but are not limited to:
  • Censorship
  • Copyright and intellectual property
  • Online activism & political dissent
  • Access & equity
  • Grass-root resistance in virtual worlds & gaming
  • Privacy & security
  • The role of the state/private interests
  • Changing paradigms of education and training
  • Issues of transnational information flows
The topic submission system will allow you to vote for the topics you’d like to see included, so please make sure to register your vote (and maybe even volunteer to take part in a panel discussion!). We will update the website and Twitter feed when the registration system is operational.

Given this is an unConference, there will be no ‘speeches’ or prepared papers.  unConferences rely on debate, discussion and conversation centred around user-submitted panel themes. If you are unfamiliar with the unConference format, wiki it {http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unconference} or check the IRGO website for the FAQs (available soon).

For the first time, irgo is also excited to announce a series of pre-unConference workshops and roundtable events that will be held on January 26. Further details and registration instructions will be announced shortly on the website.
